Chandelier As Art

portrait.jpg

Everything And Nothing:

Adam Wallacavage makes a living as a photographer. But he also makes chandeliers, designs interiors, builds interiors and can make or fix just about anything. He calls himself “a happy artist who knows how to do lots of different things with stuff.”

He recently finished the Sailor Jerry store in Philadelphia, where he designed the interior and made two huge chandeliers with big ceiling medallions. Adam has gotten so known for his chandeliers that he recently had a show of them at Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York City. He will return to the gallery in December of 2007 for a second show with Ray Caesar.

White Orbit Chandelier

Apartment Therapy:

Many mini lights make up the White Orbit Chandelier by designer Patrick Townsend.

The fixture is available as large as 42″ in diameter.

We love the webby nature of the structure, tying pinpoints of light together in a sort of latticework. The matrix of lights is handmade to order.

Could You Build A Chandelier?

Mrs Kew:

So my husband built a lamp in college, apparently this qualifiies him to construct a chandelier in the likes of one we saw in the Picasso museum in Paris this past week. I think we have a good shot at being able to get it together. The initial plan is to try and use PVC pipes and plasters strips to wrap the creation. We would want to hang it in the master bedroom.

Here are the inspiration pieces:

Tertial Chandelier

tertial_chandelier.jpg

Ikea Hacker:

It consists of three tertial desklamps, fixed upside down to the ceiling. the tertial lamp is the simplest and cheapest and i already had one laying around. the room calls for a decorative lighting fixture, but there is no such thing as a cheap, beautiful, classy chandelier. my solution was to add a bit of irony, surprise and humor to the problem. in combination with a dimmer, the result works surprisingly well.

Yes, These Really Are Compact Fluorescents

bulb.jpg

Globe And Mail:

Okay, so you can stop freaking out about having to outfit your beautiful chandelier with those ugly coils and tubes.

Yes, Ottawa announced this week that incandescent lights will be banned by 2012. But the lighting industry is already designing much better versions of compact fluorescent bulbs than the stereotypical twisty style. Sylvania produces 50 different models, everything from flood lights to chandelier bulbs, which are designed with smooth casings to hide their tubes. The company has just come out with a dimmable compact fluorescent.

And while the common complaint is that CFLs are “cold,” new versions can look as warm and cozy as traditional globes.

The Panasonic Gen IV Light Capsule would fool anyone.

They do cost a lot more, though they last for years. And true, they contain mercury. But Ikea, another pioneer in the CFL trend, has a take-back program (just as it has for batteries). Let’s hope other retailers soon see the light. More.

Restoration Work Sheds Light On History

restoration.jpg

Auburn Journal:

A Grass Valley man’s business involves shining a light on history.

Paul Ivazes (photo), owner of Quality Lighting, recreates and restores gaslight fixtures dating from the 1840s to the 1900s.

What has become an all-consuming vocation started by accident. Ivazes was hitchhiking and the person who picked him up offered him a job. “The next day I was at Cedar Ridge polishing brass,” he said.

When his boss decided to open a lighting store in the Bay Area, Ivazes went along, too. Eventually he decided to launch his own business, specializing in historical lighting.

“There’s so much history,” he said. “The fun thing is the thrill of finding an antique light fixture and bringing it back to its original luster.”

There aren’t many people in his line of work. “I’m the main guy this side of the Mississippi,” he said.

In fact, his customers span the nation. He’s worked on capitol buildings for Georgia, Alabama and Michigan, and the governor’s office in Ohio and Rhode Island. He even restored a chandelier for the Smithsonian early in his career.
