Herald Dispatch:
Before there was electricity or gas there were candle holders that hung from ceilings to light the way after dark. In Old French the word for candle is “chandelle” and in Middle English it is chandeler. Over the years the word chandelier evolved to mean an overhead light fixture with arms reaching out from the center.
Chandeliers can be dated back to medieval times where the well to do or the church might have had such a contraption lighting their halls. They often were made of wood with spikes shooting up to hold the candle. Later, the Dutch and the Flemish exhibited examples of brass chandeliers in the homes of their upper classes. The Venetians on the island of Murano, the English and the French all came up with glass versions of the chandelier in the 1700s. Improvements have continued through time. Keep reading →

Yorkshire Post:
Martin Sloan, of specialist cleaners the Chandelier Group in Essex, polishes one of the chandeliers in the main hallway at York Mansion House as the Lord Mayor’s residence undergoes its annual spring clean.
The contractors are at the Grade I-listed Georgian house, official residence of York’s first citizen, to remove dust and grime from the house’s collection of chandeliers.
Three large crystal light fittings grace the State Room, with more sparkling examples in the downstairs entrance hall and above the main staircase.
The latter, in a fitting 18th century style, was created by York craftsman Dick Reid, and illuminates an imposing portrait of another famous son of York, George Hudson, the “Railway King” who did much to make the city a major hub of the national rail network.
The cleaners will be on site today.
The house re-opens for public tours on March 30 but is available for private group visits in the meantime.
The next “at home” event hosted by Lord Mayor Janet Hopton for York residents will take place on April 10.

Mango Pearl:
I got the idea of the chandelier design when I was looking for our chandelier in Phoenix. I saw one similar to that only only smaller and was not available for sale until three months later. I couldn’t wait that long. So, I went to our local metalsmith and showed him our design and specifications.
It wasn’t easy to make. It took him a month or so to finish it. I paid $800 for it. I didn’t realize it was a bargain until one day when I had a visitor in our house from California who sold metal art. He took notice of my chandelier. He said, if he was to make it, he would sell it for $2,600 to $3,000.
Wow! I got the chandelier for a bargain. It looks beautiful at night when lit. In fact, it is the main attraction of the living room. In the future, should I decide to move again, for some reason, I will make sure I take that chandelier with me.

eBay:
Magnificent stained glass window, measuring approximately 24-3/4″ x 74-1/2″ with the 3-dimensional grape and leaf design is a signed Tiffany Studios window with the curvilinear TS insignia between the two words. Mahogany Frame.
The signatures dates to 1905. The acid etched signature appears in the narrow glass strip located on the lower right corner of the window.
Tiffany art glass is dichronic glass, which takes on different color and characteristics according to the light. The coloring of the polychromatic glass in this piece is typical of the works of Tiffany which reflect his skills in producing glass true to nature’s colors.
This window is a unique, one of a kind masterpiece. It was created for a New York bank, and installed over the front door.
Louis Comfort Tiffany was the father of the American Art Nouveau movement, representing nature idealized. The grapes, leaves, and vines pattern of this window represent a classic art nouveau pattern.
Drapery glass was invented by LC Tiffany. I believe that this piece was created by Louis Comfort Tiffany himself. I have never before seen nor heard of any window with glass created in a 3-dimensional effect like this one. Two of the pieces of 3D glass are 5/8″ deep.
He was a great experimenter, as seen in the many, fabulous and unique characteristics of this outstanding piece…
