Light the way

The Sun Herald:

Good lighting is essential for any room. It should be appropriate for the room’s purpose and it should fit the design featured in that room. But to take your room to another level, accent lighting could be considered that slice of fresh lemon in a glass of water.
at_the_mirror.jpg
“There are three basic forms of this light,” said Ray Ebberman, owner of Ray’s Interior Design Co. in Gulfport:

Focus, or directional: “That’s the emphasis on direct light. It’s for displays,” he said.

Transitional: “It gets you from one place to another.”

Mood lighting: This can include special or unusual lamps, candles and other lighting that adds a final statement to an area…

… The master bath takes on dramatic romance through a candlelit chandelier over the tub and a complementing wall sconce near the door. More illumination is provided by can lights and softly lit electric sconces over the twin mirrors at the vanity.

“Candle chandeliers often have a pulley system,” Ebberman said. “The cord is attached to the body of the fixture, and it can be raised or lowered by the pulley.”

Endless helps to light the way ahead

Some of the world’s finest churches and palaces will be illuminated with help from Endless, the £100m Yorkshire-based private equity and buyout fund.

bg_dutch.jpg

Yorkshire Post Today:

Dernier & Hamlyn, the company which designs chandeliers for 10 Downing Street and St Paul’s Cathedral, last Friday sealed the first major acquisition in its 120-year history.

The group secured backing from Leeds-based Endless to finance the purchase, for an undisclosed sum, of luxury firms Tindle Lighting and Reid Lighting. Dernier & Hamlyn (D&H) said Tindle’s expertise in light fittings and Reid’s strength in crystal lighting would help it win global clients, particularly in the hotel business.

D&H holds the Royal Warrant to the Queen, which gives it the right to carry out work in Royal palaces and houses. Recent projects have included the restoration of a chandelier in St James’s Palace. The group also designed the first new chandelier in St Paul’s Cathedral for more than 300 years.

D&H employs 15 staff, headquartered in Bicester, Oxfordshire, with a factory in Croydon, while Tindle has eight staff, with three shops in London and a warehouse in Wimbledon.

Giant Crystal Chandelier Cleaned

giant-crystal-chandelier-cleaned.jpg

Today’s tmj4:

A big cleaning job wrapped up at the Pabst Theater Tuesday (06).

The giant chandelier was lowered so that each Austrian crystal could be cleaned and polished by hand. There are 33 running inches of crystals, and the whole thing weighs about 1.23 tons.

Each jewel had to be cleaned by hand with a lint-free cloth. The work was completed by a dedicated staff of volunteers.

Pat Balon, of the Pabst Theater, said the cleaning really made a difference. It took about eight hours to clean.

Chandelier tension

chandelier_tension.jpg

Physics Foruns:

Amria’s question:

A chandelier with mass m is attached to the ceiling of a large concert hall by two cables. Because the ceiling is covered with intricate architectural decorations (not indicated in the figure, which uses a humbler depiction), the workers who hung the chandelier couldn’t attach the cables to the ceiling directly above the chandelier. Instead, they attached the cables to the ceiling near the walls. Cable 1 has tension T_1 and makes an angle of theta_1 with the ceiling. Cable 2 has tension T_2 and makes an angle of theta_2 with the ceiling.

Find an expression for T1 that does not include T2

I have found that the

Sum of the forces of in the x direction is T2cos(theta2) - T1cos(theta1) = 0

Sum of the forces in the y direction is T1sin(theta1) + T2sin(theta2) - mg = 0

from the first equation, T2= T1cos(theta1)/cos(theta2)

would then T1sin(theta1) + T1cos(theta1)/cos(theta2)*sin(theta2) - mg = 0?
Any ideas how to solve algebraicly for T1?

Hage567’s answer:

To start, isolate the T1 terms on one side of your equation. That might make things a bit clearer.

The Antique Brass Chandelier

mini_brass_pink_chand_with_flower_shades.JPG

Home Repair:

In each interior intended for a particular space at your house, there is always a light fixture that will match the ambiance that you would want to obtain. This is also to enhance its beauty since any illumination will give much power over it. Much more when an Antique brass chandelier will be placed for embellishment. Actually, choosing over the wide selection available can be very overwhelming since there is the Capiz shell, Wrought iron, Murano glass or Crystal candle that will compete in the market.

Like all the others, an Antique brass chandelier has its own unique characteristic that cannot be copied by any of its kind. It has this tendency to feel more grand yet grounded. It also has this fragile nature but it will seemingly say that if you will use me, you will for sure have a great time. Another is that, it will grant you functional longevity because I am durable. Well, of course, you can never hear it directly because yes, it is tangible, but it is not any manner a living thing.

An Antique brass chandelier is understood to be made of metal that will provide that complimentary and temperate feeling. More.

Chandeliers For Valentine’s Day

San Francisco Chronicle:

h_lighting_1.jpgThere’s a wide range of switches you could be flipping this Valentine’s Day, and here are a few:

1. Jonathan Adler’s new lighting collection has been a big hit in the funky designer’s Fillmore Street store, with the quite bright (so, get a dimmer), 30-light Bamboo Chandelier (below, center) starring in the Meurice collection. It’s cast in nickel, brass or bronze and creates a whole lot more drama than its price tag, $595.

2. Also at Jonathan Adler, what he describes as “the cutest sconce ever,” the 15-inch-high Parker Half Round Wall Sconce is available in polished nickel (shown at left) or, our fave, a deep patina bronze. The Parker collection also includes table and floor lamps with Carrara marble or bronze bases, at prices ranging from $125 for the cutest sconce ever to $495 for a floor lamp. (2133 Fillmore St., www.jonathanadler.com)

3. Spanish alabaster anchors the Tristan table lamp from Williams-Sonoma Home, and with deep bronze veining and unique inclusions, no two look quite alike (below). The rectangular shade nicely balances this piece, which is far too heavy to be thrown should the romantic holiday have some bumps along the way. At 24 inches high and $395, it takes up to 150 watts and has a full-range dimmer switch. (Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto, or see www.wshome.com)

4. Another Williams-Sonoma brand, West Elm, leans toward the contemporary, and the Antler table lamp (below right) falls in with the hot trend of evoking nature. The base is polished silver decorated with white resin sculpted to look like antlers, which probably could really hurt someone, so don’t even think of throwing this pretty piece. 26 inches high, $149. (Corte Madera Town Center, www.westelm.com)

5. Who could afford to throw the unique Branch Environ (above), a 7-foot floor lamp of solid Honduran mahogany with a $6,350 price tag from Wired Custom Lighting? And who would want to? It’s one of the cutting-edge custom designs from a cutting-edge Los Angeles designer, Mishel Michael, who recently opened a Manhattan showroom. (Other showrooms in West Hollywood and Dania Beach, Fla., www.wired-designs.com)

6. An Emeryville company that produces unusual designs, Ironies, recently premiered the Jaren chandelier. The four-light, cast-resin faux bois chandelier has a bowl of 30 1/2 inches diameter, 7 inches high, and positively shimmers in the manner of golden, light tea. Available to the trade only at Kneedler-Fauchere in the San Francisco Design Center, we’re guesstimating from the secret trade price that it will set the consumer back for between $4,500 and $6,000. (Kneedler-Fauchere, www.ironies.com)
ho_lighting.jpg
7. The new Collector’s Edition lighting from Baker is sweeter than a box of chocolates, with beautiful homages to Venice of the 1600s and France of all eras. The Giles French Leaf Chandelier (top left), so delicate with its crown of leaves in weathered pewter encircling a six-light (60-watt max) candelabrum and connecting to a smaller circle of leaves at the top, harks back to the pieces of 18th century French Provencal. Suggested retail begins at $4,620. (Visit Flegels, Design&Interiors and other retailers that carry Baker, or go to www.kohlerinteriors.com)
o_lighting.jpg
8. As for Tracy Porter, she’s blended the pretty with the practical for her Venice six-light (60-watts) chandelier (top right). The chandelier’s finish is vintage gold, and tiny hand-painted flowers give it a delicate Asian look. But then there are the pothooks, six of them, making this chandelier perfect for the kitchen, or wherever one might be cooking on Valentine’s Day. $3,361 (866-388-7229, online at www.tracyporter.com).

How To Assemble A Handmade Italian Murano Glass Chandelier

assemble.JPG

Scrap Book:

… If you are buying an antique chandelier–ask what voltage and type of sockets it is wired for. If you order one to be made, take a photos of the sample in the same style as you ordered. It doesn’t matter if it has the same number of arms or not–it is the center post glass sections that you need to see. It is made up of many small pieces stacked, so you need to know how to stack them in the same order.

Unpack carefully–have a place where you can set the pieces out right in front of you, good lighting, nothing to trip on, no cats around, etc.

Set the arms, cups, flowers, aside and look for the metal center post and all tubular shaped & cup pieces that cover the center post.

If you bought a chandelier that was hanging in a shop in Murano it may be really dusty. Washing the intricate pieces before assembly is a good idea–but consider putting a folded dish cloth in the sink bottom murano-chandelier-hanging.jpgas a precaution, just in case one slipped from your hand. Wash one piece at a time, if one fell, you don’t want it to fall on another piece in the bottom of the sink.

The idea here is that one multi-strand wire runs from the ceiling down through the center rod and under the metal base plate, all the individual wires from the arms connect to the main center wires.
